2021: The Israeli Defense Sectors discovering the IT-cloud

Dorcom is a long-standing and experienced company in the field of IT infrastructure in Israel, the company was founded in 1982, and is in fact the largest partner of HPE in Israel. HPE, a world leader in the field of DC (“Data Centers”), provides complete hardware solutions – servers, storage, communications and more.

The world of computers and IT infrastructure is in fact a market that combines considerations of a commercial, technological, economic and security domains. Every technological organization (banks, security sector, business sector, etc.) encounters the question of where to hold the information and manage the technological activity – whether in the “cloud” or in the company’s facilities. Companies with security needs or exceptional information security needs – in fact “lower the cloud from the sky to the ground” and produce a private cloud which is in the company’s facilities but acts as a cloud for all intents and purposes in terms of services provided and access to information.

Zeev Segal, VP of Projects and Sales at Dorcom for the security sector, has worked at Dorcom for eight years – but in his background he is one of the most senior salespeople in the country for the domains of IT infrastructure. Zeev says that HPE, and Dorcom, are promoting the Green Lake concept, a business model that brings the benefits of the public cloud to companies that choose to use a private cloud. Along with all the benefits of cloud maintenance in the company’s facilities, HPE takes responsibility for the equipment and hardware installed at the customer’s site, and the customer pays only according to the actual consumption of resources (storage, CPU resources, etc.).

Dorcom is active in Israel in the verticals of enterprise, government and commercial. The company accompanies and supports its customers for many years in a variety of activities – both in the company’s own infrastructure, and in the infrastructure that its customers establish in the world for their customers. The company is in fact a partner of the defense companies in consulting, determining architecture, selling, lending equipment, maintenance and more – a one-stop-IT-shop and strategic supplier/partner to many projects worldwide.

One of the interesting topics, Dorcom, as a company that works and sees the cross-section of the entire defense industry in Israel, identifies “cross-industry” trends in the field of IT infrastructure, and trends to follow. Zeev describes the trends he has identified in the defense industry in the past year:

  • When a security company deploys an “innovative” project to a customer in Israel or around the world, it will provide the same solution (with minimal changes) to other customers as well, so determining the right architecture from the beginning by experienced professionals is essential.
  • Defense companies rarely (for obvious reasons) use a public cloud, and if they do – it is mainly for very unclassified needs, the majority for marketing and sales purposes.
  • During the COVID-19 period, quite a few “private clouds” services were established in the defense companies to address the remote work of employees from home. This existential need to address remote work, has removed quite a few barriers of “psychological barriers and fears” from managers and staff in the defense industry.
  • It is clear that in the past year, defense companies are less afraid to implement out-of-the-box solutions for small and medium-sized companies in the world of IT infrastructure, and not just technologies originating from large established companies.
  • The cyber world in the defense industry (in export projects) is still very new, and defense companies are looking for their niche in the global ecosystem.
  • The weight and responsibility that the CISO receives in the defense industries has changed significantly, and exposure at senior management levels.

.

When Zeev is asked about trends in which he believes in the future, he emphasizes the reciprocity in the development of the defense companies, along with the service provided to them by Dorcom, and the impressive offering and capabilities of HPE. Dorcom is evolving, and in addition to existing services, it also offers services such as joint planning, architecture and delivery to its customers.

Looking to the future of the defense sector, Zeev notices a number of main trends:

  • Significant structural changes – unification of IT infrastructure between different division and activities in the organization, setting common cross-organizational standards, leveraging the “size advantage” in purchasing IT equipment.
  • Significant rejuvenation of the age of professional IT infrastructure employees.
  • Technological trends in automation, private cloud in the company’s facilities (On-Prem), strengthening the security worlds at the architecture level: micro-segmentation.
  • The companies are already in the DR (Data Recovery) era but have not really entered the BCP (Business Continuity Process) phase. In the near future this is going to happen. Companies understand the value of continuity not necessarily in maintaining information, but in maintaining business activity.
  • The organizations, and the managements of the organizations, understand and invest in the management and storage of the information – the information is the main asset of the organization, and care must be taken to concentrate it in a safe, secure and backed place.
  • Although many budgets are directed to information security and cyber, most of the resources are directed to employees and to improve the professional technology skills in the field, and not to technology purchasing.
